Summer 2022: Constructing the Research Paper

Program Outline

Week 1: The Writing Process

Students are introduced to the basics of the writing process, focusing on brainstorming and selecting topics for writing a research paper.

Week 2: The Thesis Statement

Students are introduced to the central question to be answered in the research paper, the thesis statement; how thesis statements are formulated and framed.

Week 3: The Five-Paragraph Argumentative Essay

Students are introduced to the five-paragraph argumentative essay, the foundational framework for constructing longer essays.

Week 4: Sources and Evidence

Students learn how to collect and organize the evidence for supporting the thesis statement.

Week 5: The Research Paper (First Draft)

Students write a first draft of their research paper.

Week 6: The Research Paper (Revisions)

Students revise the first draft of their research paper.

Week 7: Round Table

Students participate in a round table discussion of their research papers.
